Divergent by Veronica Roth

Title: Divergent
Author: Veronica Roth
Pages: 487
Publication Date: May. 3rd, 2011

Back Cover:  One choice decides your friends, defines your beliefs and determines your loyalties... forever.

When sixteen-year-old Tris makes her choice, she cannot foresee how drastically her life will change. Or that the perfect society in which she lives in is about to unfold into a dystopian world of electrifying decisions, stunning consequences, heartbreaking betrayals and unexpected romance.

One choice can transform you.

First Lines: There is one mirror in my house. It is behind a sliding panel in the hallway upstairs. Our faction allows me to stand in front of it on the second day of every third month, the day my mother cuts my hair.

My Thoughts: This book is amazing. Other words to describe it could include: perplexing, captivating, and just plain stunning. Dystopian novels like this are rapidly catching up in popularity to science fiction and fantasy, and I can see why.

I love the plot. It is different and original, and doesn't include vampires, werewolves or any other mythical creatures falling in love with humans, which is GOOD, because those storylines are too overdone and unoriginal. Most of the twists are mysteries, but a couple are predictable, but that happens in most books. The emotions in this book are so strong, I was laughing in some parts and had tears in my eyes in others. There are problems that characters have to face physically and also emotionally, which really lets you connect to them.

The characters were well put together. There are a lot of supporting characters which are seen throughout the whole book, which I like. The story isn't revolved around two or three people, where only a couple of other characters are mentioned once or twice. My favourite characters in this book would have to be Four, Tris, Tris's mother and Uriah. Four just has so many emotions locked up, but he is a really interesting character. I like Tris, not just becasue she is the heroine, but because she has so many emotional wars going on inside her, and she struggles to figure them out. She is also not one of the drop-dead gorgeous stereotypical heroines, she has flaws, which is a nice change, becasue nobody is perfect. Tris's mother is really supportive and lets people make their own decisions, which had a huge impact on how Tris handled her problems. And I like Uriah becasue he just has a personality which I like, and adds more depth to the book.

Okay, I am not going to write a lengthy conclusion. Basically, if you haven't read the book, go and read it now! This is my current favourite book, and it is different from the usual vampire stories that seem to be in most YA books. It is just a fantastic book, that's all there is to it.

  1. I loved this book! Although I liked the beginning and middle better than the ending. I can't wait to see what happens in the sequel!
