Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare

Clockwork Prince (The Infernal Devices, #2)
Title: Clockwork Prince
Author: Cassandra Clare
Pages: 502
Publication Date: Dec. 6th, 2011

Back Cover:  In the magical underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has at last found safety with the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when rogue forces in the Clave plot to see her protector, Charlotte, replaced as head of the Institute. If Charlotte loses her position, Tessa will be out on the street and easy prey for the mysterious Magister, who wants to use Tessa's powers for his own dark ends.

With the help of the handsome, self-destructive Will and the fiercely devoted Jem, Tessa discovers that the Magister's war on the Shadowhunters is deeply personal. He blames them for a long-ago tragedy that shattered his life. To unravel the secrets of the past, the trio journeys from mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor house that holds untold horrors, from the slums of London to an enchanted ballroom where Tessa discovers that the truth of her parentage is more sinister than she had imagined. When they encounter a clockwork demon bearing a warning for Will, they realize that the Magister himself knows their every move and that one of their own has betrayed them.

Tessa finds her heart drawn more and more to Jem, though her longing for Will, despite his dark moods, continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will; the wall he has built around himself is crumbling. Could finding the Magister free Will from his secrets and give Tessa the answers about who she is and what she was born to do?

As their dangerous search for the Magister and the truth leads the friends into peril, Tessa learns that when love and lies are mixed, they can corrupt even the purest heart.

First Lines: The fog was thick, muffling sound and sight. Where it parted, Will Herondale could see the street rising ahead of him, slick and wet and black with rain, and he could hear the voices of the dead.

My Thoughts: Suspense, thrill, mystery, romance and humour. This book has it all. Clockwork Prince did not disappoint me. After the cliffhanger at the end of Clockwork Angel, I was so excited to find out what happens in this book, only to be rewarded with another cliffhanger at the end, which was one of the only frustrating parts of the book.

Another frustrating part of the book was the love triangle. If you have read Clockwork Angel you will know what I am talking about. The feelings in the triangle between Tessa, Jem and Will didn't come up near as much as in Clockwork Angel as they did in the sequel. When you think about it, most of Clockwork Prince is focused on the Tessa-Will-Jem situation.

One thing I loved about this book was the whole story surrounding Will and his family. I was so shocked to find out the truth about what happened to make him so closed and why he would push people away. I think it was bad parenting (If you've read the book, you will know what I am talking about). And then with the twist and what happens when he tells Tessa, I was so upset.

Will did some selfish things in this book that Jem was upset about, but I believe Will needed to do this to just spend some time not caring about anything. I don't know why, but I didn't really like Jem in this book. I didn't trust his motives and I believe he betrayed Will, in a way. Then there are the whole stories with Nate and Jessamine, Henry and Charlotte, and Sophie and Gideon. There is a lot of drama in this book.

Cassandra Clare's books are hilarious, and this one didn't break that chain. There was plenty of comedy and sarcasm  in this book, which contradicts the dark and mysterious plot.

This is a book I highly recommend for anyone who has read Clockwork Angel. And if you haven't read that book, then go and read it and then read this book. With all of the drama, mystery and humour, this book is well balanced and I recommend it for anyone who loves Paranormal Romance and books which take place in the 18th and 19th centuries.

  1. This book was fantastic! I felt that compared to Clockwork Angel that this book was based off more of Tessa's relationships with Will and Jem. I also loved how Cassandra Clare maded Sophie,Gideon,Charalotte and Henry more involved in the book. I would highly recomend this book it is a must read. It made me feel like i was there and experiencing Tessa,Will and Jem's heart throbs, and adventures!enjoy!
